Check out our new candles for equestrians

We’re so excited to be stocking equestrian candles in several gorgeous fragrances – all made by the Grey Horse Candle Company in the good ol’ US of A. We love how much the founder, Leyna, puts her passion for horses into her business, creating a candle collection that is unique in its conception and in its fragrances. We currently stock five fragrances – High End Saddle (yes it really does smell like leather), Fresh Cut Hay, Early Morning Hack, Spring Pasture and Cedar Shavings (my favourite, both for the memories it evokes and for the satisfaction of having a clean, fresh smelling stable, even if only for a short while until dinner time!)

Looking after your candle

So that you get the most from your equestrian candle I thought I’d put together a few helpful tips on candle care. Just following a few steps will ensure your candle lass as long as possible – and these beauties last up to 35 hours.

Your candle is made from high-quality soy wax and is hand poured at Grey Horse Candle HQ in Florida. Soy wax is less sooty than paraffin wax and more environmentally friendly, as it’s from a renewable source, it also burns slower so lasts longer.

The melt pool and wick

The first time you light your candle you should let it create a full melt pool – this means letting it burn until the melted wax reaches the sides of the container. This ensures subsequent burns also extend to the edges of the container and the melted wax does not simply pool in the middle around the wick, burning downwards (which is known as tunnelling). A candle that does not achieve a full melt pool on first burn soon features a build-up of unmelted wax around the edges of the container.

Speaking of the wick, keep this trimmed – Leyna recommends ¼ inch as the optimal length for the best fragrance throw (how far the scent reaches into the room). Keeping the wick short also means less soot as the flame is smaller, less wax melted so your candle lasts longer, and a more even burn. Scissors, nail clippers or a specialist candle wick trimmer can all be used for this.

Remember - four hours max

Avoid burning your candle for more than four hours at a time, otherwise the wax heats up too much, which reduces the fragrance and can create more smoke. After extinguishing then let the candle come back to room temperature before lighting again.

The other side to this is of course if you don’t burn your candle regularly then replace the lid between each use (when the candle is cold). This way you prevent dust and bits from settling on the surface of your candle – possibly affecting the look and the scent when you relight it. All of our candles come with lids to protect them when they’re not in use.

I hope you love these candles as much as we do; their fragrances lift the spirits, transporting you back to the stable and your happy place on the yard until you can get back there for real with your horse and the next round of turning out… bringing in… mucking out… and feeding!
